French de and en as expressions of the genitive case: a unified analysis within LFG and computational implementation in XLE

ABSTRACT The French clitic pro-form en represents a wide range of heterogeneous constituents: de-PP complements and adjuncts, partitive objects, prepositionless objects cardinals. main goal this paper is to formalize relationship computationally in terms genitive case. This apparently the first non-transformational counterpart Kayne (1975)’s unified analysis, which derives from deep structure with de by means syntactic transformations. Transformational grammars are problematic parsing perspective. In order test our analysis automatically on large amount data, we implemented it computational grammar Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG) formalism using XLE system. framework particularly fit for expressing systematic relationships between structures has successfully been used implementation natural language since 1980s. We tested 320 grammatical sentences an equal number ungrammatical examples. It analyzed all examples blocked almost 95% ones, showing high empirical adequacy grammar.
